Is your family experiencing a housing transition?
Your school-age children may qualify for certain rights and protections under the McKinney Vento Education of Homeless Children and Youth Assistance Act.
These rights and protections include:
* Enrolling immediately in school, even if lacking documents normally required for enrollment
* Attending your school of origin
* Receiving transportation to and from the school of origin free of charge if requested by your family
* Receiving free and appropriate education services
School or origin refers to: The last school enrolled or last school district where your student was permanently housed
The McKinney-Vento Act defines Homeless children as:
"individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence"
Examples Include:
* Doubled up with other people due to loss of housing, economic hardship or similar reasons
* Living in a motel, hotel or campground due to lack of adequate alternative accommodation
* Living in an emergency or transitional shelter
* Living in cars, parks, bus station or public spaces
