Is your family experiencing a housing transition?
Your school-age children may qualify for certain rights and protections under the McKinney Vento Education of Homeless Children and Youth Assistance Act.

These rights and protections include:

* Enrolling immediately in school, even if lacking documents normally required for enrollment

* Attending your school of origin

* Receiving transportation to and from the school of origin free of charge if requested by your family

* Receiving free and appropriate education services

School or origin refers to: The last school enrolled or last school district where your student was permanently housed

The McKinney-Vento Act defines Homeless children as:

"individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence"

Examples Include:

* Doubled up with other people due to loss of housing, economic hardship or similar reasons

* Living in a motel, hotel or campground due to lack of adequate alternative accommodation

* Living in an emergency or transitional shelter

* Living in cars, parks, bus station or public spaces

If you believe you, or your child, may be eligible
